I had mulled over doing this marathon for several weeks before I just impulsively registered and thus ended my indecision. I was finally sold by the race brochure which advertised "a challenging course, serious bragging rights and an unique finishers medal". This was the second annual marathon for Texada Island. Last year was a small affair and this year would be even smaller. Texada is a short ferry ride from Powell River on the Sunshine Coast. I got to Texada on the Saturday before the race and then went to check out the local sights. I didn't intend to drive the course, I never do, it is too intimidating. However, it is hard to drive on Texada without driving on the course. So I drove most of the course and for sure it was challenging. There were a lot of hills but no 'screamer', just a continual wave design of long and short, gentle to medium ups and downs. Also the course was about 60% gravel roads and 40% paved roads.Posted by: Mark Hyder

When I got my race number (#1221) for the California International Marathon I immediately assembled my top notch race-number-analysis team (Mika, Eileen, and Derek) to decipher its meaning. The first prediction was a 12 hour 21 min finish time. Possible no doubt, but even I would have to get seriously lost to achieve that time. Closer analysis revealed it was going to be a palindromic finish time. Using some complex algorithms Mika was then able to conclude that my finish time would be 3.33. Oh, that would be nice I said...but I don't think so.Posted by: Pamela Campbell
